Kathmandu: The Gen-G movement took a violent and unprecedented turn as protesters targeted major government institutions and political leaders’ residences following the deaths of 19 youths in police action on Monday.
Government Institutions in Flames
Protesters set fire to Nepal’s main administrative hub, Singha Durbar, along with other critical state institutions. The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Supreme Court at Ramshahpath, and the Federal Parliament Building in Naya Baneshwor were all severely damaged by fire.
In addition, the Attorney General’s Office at Ramshahpath and the Traffic Police Office at Baggikhana were torched. Witnesses reported extensive destruction, with several archives and offices reduced to ashes.
Residences of Top Leaders Attacked
Protesters also stormed and vandalized the private residences of top leaders. The homes of CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, and former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal were attacked, with parts of them set ablaze.
Residences of UML leaders Gokul Baskota, Mahesh Basnet, and Mahesh Bartaula were also vandalized and burned. Reports indicate that some leaders were even physically assaulted by protesters.
Escalation After Deadly Crackdown
The violence marks a dramatic escalation of the Gen-G protests, which had begun peacefully but spiraled into chaos after 19 people were killed during police action on Monday. The scale of destruction inflicted on state institutions and political figures is being described as one of the most serious challenges to Nepal’s governance in decades.
